Featured MUA: Erica T. Martell from Rhode Island

From the beautiful East Coast, we proudly feature Erica this month. Her amazing talent shows on her work and we could not be any happier to see our Cluster Eyelash Extensions is a part of her work in the last couple of years.

Eyemimo: Please tell us about yourself?
Erica: I’m a makeup artist and I specialize in modern, clean beauty. I also have the superpower of making people feel like a million bucks! I got my start in the world of theater—I studied costume design at Emerson College in Boston. When I moved to NYC after graduation, I reached out to fellow Emerson alumni, makeup artist Bobbi Brown, who connected me with her team, and I soon fell into the fashion and beauty world there. I worked as a freelancer in NYC for a few years and then stepped away from makeup to work as a photography producer, where I was fortunate enough to work and travel alongside some of the world’s most prominent fashion photographers, designers, supermodels, celebrities and retailers for many years. But I came back to beauty. The transformative power of makeup has been a lifelong passion of mine, although these days I’m much more interested in makeup as a tool for transforming the way women feel, as opposed to it being all about the surface. The connections I make when I’m invited to share intimate spaces with women are what I value most in my career. I’m passionate about continuing my education and exposure to new techniques and trends—I stay current with workshops and classes led by the best in the industry. Exposing myself and my art is a way for me to be humbled and inspired by all the incredible talent that’s out there. This July, after years of being worn down by my husband to move to the beach, we bought our dream house in Rhode Island—where I’m now based and travel from. The light and open spaces here are incredibly inspiring! I’m excited to dive into this next phase of my life and career.

Eyemimo: What do you like the most and the least being a makeup artist?
Erica: This is my calling and my gift—to make others feel nurtured, confident and beautiful. The connection I make with my clients literally fills me with joy and gives me purpose. I’m also exposed to the smartest, most creative and amazing clients who inevitably enrich my life just by virtue of me getting to know them. The people I meet and stories I hear—I learn so much from my clients!

Eyemimo: Do you have any makeup advice that you would like to share with us?
Erica: It sounds cliché, but less IS more. I practice restraint in my work, which is a hard task when there are so many colors and textures to choose from. Ask yourself if you really NEED to add it. The answer may surprise you.

Eyemimo: Is there anything else you want to share with us? such as the highlight moment of your career?
Erica: Meeting Beyonce! Just kidding! I have had many career highlights, but the ones I treasure most are the fine art side projects I do with fellow creatives. Nothing comes close to the high of the creative process.
