From the sunny of Southern California, we are delighted to introduce Maggie Cathey, makeup artist/esthetician/owner of Mags Cathey, who has been using our cluster eyelash extensions since 2016.

Eyemimo: Please tell us about yourself?
Mag: I was born and raised in Long Beach, CA and am now based out of Glendora CA. I was a theater major in college where I quickly realized I did not love school but I did love makeup. I’ve been doing makeup since high school and being a theater major in college allowed me to meet some awesome people and continue doing makeup for various projects, student films, and eventually weddings. Finally I realized that makeup is what I really wanted to do, but it wasn’t until 2012 that I was able to quit my day job and finally go for it full time. That’s when my company, Mags Cathey, was born. Since then I have been doing makeup for bridal, beauty photography, editorial print and the occasional commercial or video. Earlier this year I also fulfilled a dream of mine to get my Esthetician’s License. I started school last year and in February I received my License. I now have my own little studio in Glendora and love the variety of doing facials, waxing and makeup services, as well as having a better understanding of the skin to be able to educate my clients. I have been married for over 6 years to an incredible husband and we have a 4 year old daughter who’s growing up to be just like me. Which I kind of love.

Eyemimo: What do you like the most and the least being a makeup artist?
Mags: What I love the most is the look on clients faces when I’ve finished their makeup and they get to see it for the first time. There’s always a look of wonder and excitement that they still look like them just enhanced! It’s a great feeling to see that you’ve changed the way someone feels about themselves. The thing I like least is the business side of my job. As an artist, I wish I could just sit back and do what I love most, makeup and skin care. But as a business owner I have to do it all! Marketing, sales, running my website and social media, and everything else that goes with that, which does not come naturally to a right brained person like myself 🙂

Eyemimo: Do you have any makeup advice that you would like to share with us?
Mags: Less is more! In the world we live in today, I feel like we all need to hear this and remember it. Most of my clients are not looking for a glitter cut crease with contour as sharp as a knife, lashes for days and highlighter you can see from space. Most of my clients want to look like them just better. Remembering to stay simple is often just a good rule of thumb. Now this doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the looks we see on Instagram constantly. In fact, those looks can be done beautifully and with excellence and precision. But in my experience with working with real, higher end clients, thats not their preference.

Eyemimo:
Is there anything else you want to share with us? such as the highlight moment of your career?
Mags: One of my favorite artistic jobs was for last years Ceremony Magazine. A team that I work with are often featured in this bridal magazine but our spread for 2017 was my favorite. Our concept was to use one model, one dress, but to switch the hair, makeup, jewelry, and flowers 12 TIMES. It was so fun to create each look that was completely different and also a total challenge, not just to design and create the looks but to plan and execute them well over just 2 days of shooting. It will forever be one of my favorite shoots.
